こんにちは！

4月からstakのメンバーになるマイケルです。

まずは、みなさんに知っていただくために、私の自己紹介をしようと思います。

Hi!

As of this April, I am the newest member of the stak family, Michael.

I thought first and foremost that I might introduce myself. Not just because I’m new to stak, but also because blogging is new to me.

自己紹介

私は、ワシントンDCの郊外にある、レストンという街で生まれ育ちました。

レストンという街は、昔に比べると賑やかになってきましたが、静かな街です。

22歳の時に、四国の遍路の道に興味を持ち、何も知らないまま日本へ行きました。

愛媛あたりを巡礼している時に、日本に住みたいと思い始めました。

それから、日本に住むことを決断し、広島の英会話教室で英語講師として働きました。

英会話教室に勤務しつつ、独学で日本語の勉強もしていました。

英会話教室を退職後、他の地方も見てみたいと思い様々な地方へ行きました。

その間に、翻訳と写真・動画作成の分野に没頭し、Sounds of Japanを作り、株式会社Bike Tour Japanの立ち上げにも携わりました。

So, who am I and what am I doing here:

I’m an American/Canadian dual citizen who grew up in Reston, a (used to be) quiet town near Washington D.C.

I came to Japan to walk the Shikoku Pilgrimage and felt like I had to live in Japan.

I taught English for two years in Hiroshima while I studied Japanese, then spent two years wandering and getting involved with several projects.

During this time, along with creating Sounds of Japan and co-launching a company called Bike Tour Japan, I dove into translation and photography/videography work.

stakとの出会い

私はいままで、部屋へ当てもなく“Hey Alexa”と言う発言を耳にした時、ゾッとしてました。

それに、「このGoogle Homeで俺の家が便利になるぞ！」と友人から言われ呆れました。

そんな私が、IoTデバイスを作っている会社に勤めることになった事に、疑問を持つかもしれませんが、

テクノロジーは時間に余裕をもたらし、人間の幸せに繋がりがあると思っています。

しかし、いま、世の中に出ている商品は、時間のかかるように作られたデバイスが多く存在します。

IoTデバイスが作られた理由としては、人間よりコンピュータのほうが効率的にできることが多くあり、
その時間を作るために作られたのではないかと思います。

それらを、上手く使いこなすことで、時間に余裕を与えられるということです。

しかし、多くの会社が様々なデバイスを作りすぎて、リモコンやネットワーク、アプリ、デバイスなどが溢れすぎて、
複雑でややこしくなり、最終的にIoTデバイスを使うほうが時間がかかってしまっています。

そう思っていた頃、オンライン英会話教室で植田と知り合い、stakと出会いました。

stakが出来るまでの過程を聞き、stakなら「効率がもたらす幸せ」を実現する事ができると感じ、
stakのメンバーとして働くことを決めました。

Especially considering I’ve always rolled my eyes at IoT devices in general, and been frankly scared the first time someone said “Hey Alexa” to the room at large, it is weird that I’ve ended up working for an IoT company.

I stand by my view that while technology is great insofar as it saves us time (and brings us joy), a lot of technology is designed or used to take more of what time we do have.

Then I got to know Shinichiro and found out that is pretty much why stak came to be. That’s our philosophy. IoT devices were all meant to save us time and increase efficiency – and then everyone made their own devices and remotes and networks and apps and it all became so complicated and convoluted we ended up with less time and less sense than we had before the whole ordeal.

I am here to support this idea by creating something that brings it to life.

最後に

私は、翻訳、ブログ、海外戦略、コミュニケーション、写真、動画、その他のメディアなど様々な仕事をしていきます。
でも、私の役目としては、日本以外の世界にstakを知ってもらい、そしてstakと世界を結びつけたいと思っています。

And that’s exactly what I’ll be doing with stak. In terms of linguistics and strategy, I’m here to connect the rest of the world with stak, and connect stak with the rest of the world.

In more concrete terms, I’ll be doing translating, blogging, marketing, communicating, photos and videos, and various media work.
